The life of your coffee machine and the quality of coffee, majorly depend upon the water that flows through your equipment. Mostly the companies will recommend you to use filtered water. They also suggest customers to not use demineralized, distilled, and heavily filtered water. Because it could affect your machine electronics while ruining the flavor of your coffee.

We all know there are plenty of minerals in the water, which can stay and build up inside the coffee maker over time. These minerals could create a problem in the future. You can clean or reduce these minerals from your machine by using a method called de-scaling.

If you are not sure when to descale your Breville Ground Control, the machine itself will send you a message which says “dESC.” This message will appear on your LCD screen, which simply tells you to descale your coffee maker. Make sure you do it as soon as possible after the message is displayed.

The most used method to descale your Breville Grind Control is to use vinegar. Let’s get started!

1st Method – Vinegar Descaling

This method will take around 30 to 40 minutes and is recommended to be done after every 2-3 months.

  • Start by pressing the CARAFE/CUP button and then rotate the dial to the water volume that is displayed on the water tank. This will brew all of it outside.
  • Later rotate the STRENGTH dial and select PRE-GROUND. Make sure you don’t add coffee after this.
  • Make sure the lid is perfectly closed and locked and the carafe is completely empty.
  • Now press the CANCEL/START button and let the cycle finish. This will get rid of water once the cycle is finished.
  • Get 20ox of white vinegar and mix it in the water tank. Do this until the display shows “4 Cups.”
  • Now pour some cold water (filtered water). Keep adding until the display shows “12 Cups.”
  • Press the CARAFE/CUP button and set the dial to 12 Cups.
  • Now hold the STRENGTH button for exactly 5 seconds to start the process of descaling. We recommend not to disturb the descale process once it is started. You cannot stop the process. The only way of stopping the descaling process is to pull the power cable from the energy source.
  • Once the process is executed successfully the display screen will show a message saying – “READY.”
  • Now remove the water from the CARAFE and wash it properly. Make sure you clean it properly to avoid any bad vinegar taste in your coffee later.
  • Now you can press the EXIT/MENU button to return the display to the menu screen.

This was the most used and most recommended method. Vinegar and water work like a charm and cleans out everything.

2nd Method – Household Descaler

Not recommended by the many home brew lovers, but you can try this one out if you want.

  • If you want, you can use a household descaler. This will work as an alternative to the vinegar and water mixture.
  • Before purchasing or using any kind of household descaler make sure it is meant to be used for drip coffee machines.
  • Follow the instructions that came with the product to complete the process effortlessly.

How Water Affects Your Breville Ground Control

The type of water you choose to use plays a very important part. Mostly the tap water used can have a large number of minerals in it which will build up in your brewer faster than expected. And obviously, the faster minerals build up the more often you will have to descale your machine. Other types of water which build up minerals quickly are softened and overly filtered water. Yes, minerals are also essential for your machine electronics and the taste you get in your coffee. But too much of it will slowly clog the brewer. Also, if the minerals are not enough, it will result in flavor issues and sensing issues.

So, minerals are essential for your brew if you want good taste with a happy and healthy machine. The recommended water you can use in the Breville Ground Control is filtered water. Filtered water has a low amount of minerals which won’t clog up quickly but it also has enough to affect the end result of your coffee.
